Sometimes a Chai Is Enough

You don’t always need to escape your life to find a little peace inside it.

We live in a world that sometimes makes us feel as though every reset has to be dramatic.

If we’re tired, overwhelmed, or simply worn thin, surely the answer must be a weekend getaway, a major life overhaul, or some beautiful escape from reality.

And believe me, I love a getaway as much as anyone.

But lately, I’ve been thinking about the tiny resets. Those little moments that somehow make an ordinary day feel a bit more extraordinary.

Sometimes, all it takes is a chai latte.

Years ago, when we lived on Martha’s Vineyard, there was a coffee shop called Mocha Mott’s. There were locations in Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs, and it became one of those little places woven into the fabric of our everyday lives.

Parking wasn’t always easy, so sometimes I’d drop off a few of the kids, who were old enough to run inside on their own, and send them in on a very important mission.

One chai latte for Mom.

And, of course, whatever yummy treats caught their attention.

While they were inside, I’d circle the block until they emerged, treasures in hand, ready to climb back into the car.

Nothing particularly remarkable.

No grand adventure. No carefully orchestrated outing.

Just a chai latte, a few happy kids, and a little pocket of joy tucked into an ordinary day.

And yet, all these years later, I still remember it.

Funny how that happens, isn’t it?

Today, our little chai tradition looks a bit different.

Tom and I love visiting Bizarre Coffee in downtown Woodstock on the weekends. It’s become one of those simple pleasures we look forward to sharing.

And sometimes, during the workweek, he’ll surprise me by bringing a chai latte to the office.

Such a small gesture.

But there’s something especially sweet about someone knowing exactly what will brighten your day.

A warm cup. A familiar flavor. A thoughtful husband.

And suddenly, an ordinary afternoon feels a little softer.

I’ve come to believe those moments matter far more than we realize.

Because not every form of peace has to be big.

Not every reset has to be expensive.

And not every moment of joy has to be earned.

Sometimes, what we really need is something small and familiar that reminds us we’re allowed to enjoy the life we’re living, even in the middle of all its responsibilities.

A favorite drink.

A few quiet minutes.

A walk outside.

Wandering through a bookstore.

Ocean air.

Sunshine on your face.

Ten peaceful minutes in the car before heading inside.

None of these things will necessarily change our circumstances.

But they can change how we feel within them.

They can soften the edges of a difficult day.

They can help us exhale.

They can remind us that life isn’t only about the big moments, the milestones, or the destinations we’re working so hard to reach.

There’s a whole lot of living happening in between.

And I think part of living deliberately is learning to notice it.

To recognize the little rituals that restore us.

To stop dismissing simple pleasures as insignificant.

To understand that caring for ourselves doesn’t always require a grand plan.

Sometimes it simply requires paying attention.

So here’s a question worth asking yourself:

What are the little things that bring you back to yourself?

Maybe it’s your morning coffee before the rest of the house wakes up.

Maybe it’s sitting on the porch at the end of the day.

Maybe it’s music, fresh air, a drive with no particular destination, or someone who knows exactly what you need without being asked.

Whatever it is, don’t underestimate it.

Those moments count.

They’re not silly.

They’re not indulgent.

They’re part of what makes a life feel good to live.

And perhaps that’s the reminder we all need once in a while.

You don’t always have to escape your life to feel better in it.

Sometimes, you just need to find a little beauty right where you are.

A tiny ritual.

A familiar pleasure.

A thoughtful gesture.

A little sweetness in the middle of an otherwise ordinary day.

And sometimes?

Sometimes a chai is enough.

Until next week…
