The Deliberate Detour: Savannah — Part Five: The Journey Home

A Long Weekend Worth Repeating

Every wonderful trip ends the same way. Suitcases are zipped. The hotel room grows quiet. One last glance out the window. And then… home.

Monday morning arrived far sooner than either of us would have liked. Before beginning the drive back home, we had one final stop we knew we wanted to make.

Breakfast at Moss + Oak Savannah Eatery felt like the perfect farewell. There was no rushing to beat traffic and no checking the clock—just one more conversation over breakfast. Funny how some meals become memorable not because of what’s on the plate, but because of who’s sitting across from you.

As we drove home, we found ourselves talking less about where we’d been and more about what we’d bring home with us: the river views, moss-draped oaks, laughter over Pig Candy, unforgettable carrot cake, scrumptious macarons that reminded us of Europe, the tiny shark on Tybee Island, and the simple gift of having nowhere else we needed to be.

People often ask, “What was your favorite restaurant?” or “What was your favorite thing to do?” The truth is, those questions are harder to answer than you might think.

The restaurants were wonderful. The hotel was beautiful. Savannah itself was everything we’d hoped it would be.

But those aren’t the first memories that come to mind.

What I’ll remember most is walking beside Tom with nowhere else we needed to be. I’ll remember conversations that didn’t need to end because we weren’t watching the time. I’ll remember laughing over things that would mean very little to anyone else.

And I’ll remember choosing each other again.

THE DELIBERATE DETAILS

Where We Stayed: Hyatt Regency Savannah ★★★★★ — Beautiful river views and the perfect location for exploring the Historic District.

Favorite Breakfast: Goose Feathers Café & Bakery — A cozy Savannah institution and a breakfast we’d happily repeat.

Most Memorable Dessert: Better Than Sex – A Dessert Restaurant — We made a second reservation before leaving the first one. I can’t imagine a stronger recommendation than that.

Best Hidden Gem: Marché de Macarons — Scrumptious French macarons, genuine hospitality, and a little taste of Europe tucked into Savannah.

Most Unexpected Moment: Watching a tiny shark carefully released back into the Atlantic on Tybee Island.

OUR DELIBERATE VERDICT: ★★★★★

Savannah surprised us not because of one spectacular attraction, but because of the way all the smaller moments gathered together: a river view we never tired of, meals worth remembering, unexpected discoveries, time to wander, and time for each other.

We went to Savannah to celebrate our anniversary.

We came home reminded why we still make the time to celebrate us.

Perhaps that’s the greatest gift Savannah gave us—not simply a wonderful weekend, but a gentle reminder that the best destinations, and the best moments in life, are the ones we choose deliberately.

THE DELIBERATE DETOUR

Travel discerningly. Love deeply. Live deliberately.

Because the best destinations are the ones we choose deliberately.

Until our next deliberate detour…
