Sunday
There comes a point in every wonderful trip when you realize you’re no longer trying to see everything. You’re simply trying to enjoy what remains.
That was Sunday for us.
There was no pressure to check another landmark off a list. We lingered over breakfast, followed the day wherever it led, and let Savannah reveal a few final surprises. As it turned out, some of the weekend’s most memorable moments were still ahead.
Our morning began at Goose Feathers Café & Bakery, a Savannah favorite since 1986. The atmosphere was relaxed, the pastries impossible to resist, and breakfast was exactly what we hoped for—fresh, comforting, and unhurried.
From there, we made one more deliberate detour beyond the city: Tybee Island. We walked the pier, took in the lighthouse from a distance, and watched a small shark being carefully released back into the Atlantic. With the waves rolling in and the ocean breeze around us, there was nothing we needed from the moment except to be there for it.
Back in Savannah, we enjoyed a leisurely late lunch at Graffito. Stylish without being pretentious, it offered creative food, relaxed conversation, and one more discovery we hadn’t planned on.
One of our favorite discoveries, though, came in the smallest package.
Tucked along Abercorn Street is Marché de Macarons, a charming little boutique that instantly transported us back to Europe. The woman who welcomed us took time to visit with us, answer our questions, and make us feel less like customers and more like guests.
We sampled several flavors, each one more scrumptious than the last. Delicate shells, silky fillings, and beautifully balanced flavors reminded us why we had fallen in love with authentic French macarons during our travels overseas.
The true test of a memorable stop isn’t whether you enjoy it while you’re there. It’s whether you keep thinking about it after you’ve returned home.
We certainly did.
Before long, another box of macarons arrived at our front door—a delicious little reminder that some vacations have a way of following you home.
We closed our final evening with dinner at Flock to the Wok. After several days of memorable meals, ending the trip with exceptional Asian food felt like the perfect change of pace.
By the end of Sunday, Savannah had given us far more than a collection of places to recommend. It had given us long meals, beautiful streets, unexpected discoveries, laughter, and time together.
And perhaps that was the sweetest part of all.
Tomorrow, one last Savannah morning—and the drive back home.
THE DELIBERATE DETOUR
Because the best destinations are the ones we choose deliberately.
