Friday
Some mornings ask you to move quickly. Others invite you to linger. Friday morning belonged to the second kind.
Our anniversary weekend had already settled into an easy rhythm. Tom surprised me by bringing tea to our room, and I gave him his anniversary gift—a certificate for our beehive along with a personal message. Watching him read it became one of those quiet moments I’ll remember long after the details of the trip begin to blur.
Before leaving the room, we watched another enormous container ship glide along the Savannah River. The view hadn’t lost its magic overnight; if anything, it was beginning to feel like part of our morning.
Eventually, we wandered toward The Olde Pink House, stopping first at Café M, where the bottomless mimosas won my heart. While I enjoyed my mimosas, Tom slipped into Ye Ole Tobacco Shop for a cigar. We each found exactly what we were looking for.
Sometimes marriage is beautifully simple like that.
Walking into The Olde Pink House felt like stepping into another century. Tom admired the craftsmanship and remarked that it reminded him of the grand historic homes of the Northeast.
We enjoyed the meal, though we both felt the price reflected the experience as much as the food.
Dessert, however, was outstanding.
Would we recommend it? Absolutely. Would we hurry back? Probably not—and that’s exactly the kind of honest recommendation we want The Deliberate Detour to be known for.
Back at the Hyatt, we settled onto the fourth-floor patio. Tom enjoyed his cigar while I sipped a Riesling overlooking the river. No schedule. No rushing. Just conversation.
That evening, we returned to Boar’s Head Grill & Tavern, toasted our anniversary with Prosecco, enjoyed a wonderful dinner, and finished with bourbon pecan pie.
As Friday came to a close, one thought stayed with me: the best moments hadn’t required elaborate plans. They came from giving ourselves enough time to notice them.
Tomorrow, we’ll explore Forsyth Park, Starland Yard, and revisit one unforgettable dessert.
THE DELIBERATE DETOUR
Because the best destinations are the ones we choose deliberately.
