The Deliberate Detour: Savannah — Part One: The Arrival

When a Weekend Begins Exactly the Way You Hoped It Would

Some places quietly stay on your heart long before you ever arrive.

Savannah was one of those places for us.

For quite some time, Tom and I had talked about spending a long weekend there. We weren’t looking for a vacation packed with activities or an itinerary filled from morning until night. We wanted something much simpler: a walkable city, a beautiful riverfront, memorable meals, and a few unhurried days together celebrating our anniversary.

Sometimes, that’s all you really need.

As it turned out, Savannah gave us exactly that.

From the moment we stepped into the Hyatt Regency Savannah, the pace of everyday life seemed to soften. Check-in was effortless, we were welcomed with cocktails, and within minutes we were standing in our fifth-floor corner room overlooking the Savannah River.

It wasn’t just a beautiful view.

It became part of the experience.

From our window, we watched tugboats, ferries, and towering container ships make their way along the river while the historic waterfront bustled below. It was one of those rare hotel views that tempted us to linger just a little longer before heading out to explore.

Eventually, curiosity won.

We wandered toward River Street with no particular agenda, which, in hindsight, may have been one of the best decisions of the weekend. Savannah has a way of rewarding that kind of travel. Its cobblestone streets, historic architecture, and moss-draped oaks seem to invite you to wander without worrying about where you’re going next.

Our first stop was Savannah’s Candy Kitchen—a tradition we were more than happy to repeat. Free praline samples have become something of a Savannah rite of passage, and we happily accepted ours without the slightest hesitation.

Some traditions are worth keeping.

That one definitely is.

A little later, we found ourselves beneath the shade of the moss-covered oaks, watching the world pass by. It wasn’t a grand attraction or a scheduled activity. It was simply one of those moments that become memorable precisely because nothing is required of you. The drive was behind us, the weekend stretched out ahead, and there was nowhere else we needed to be.

Dinner that evening took us back to The Flying Monk Noodle Bar on Broughton Street. Having enjoyed it on a previous visit, returning felt less like repeating ourselves and more like revisiting an old favorite. We shared a meal, enjoyed the warm evening air from our table outside, and eased into the rhythm that would define the rest of the weekend.

Then came the evening’s biggest surprise.

Better Than Sex – A Dessert Restaurant.

We expected dessert.

We didn’t expect one of the highlights of the entire trip.

From the dim lighting and playful atmosphere to the warm hospitality of our server, Maria, the experience felt thoughtfully designed from beginning to end. We laughed over the menu, took our time choosing, and when dessert finally arrived, it exceeded every expectation.

The carrot cake wasn’t simply good.

It was, without question, the best either of us had ever tasted.

Before we left that evening, we had already reserved another table for Saturday night.

That should tell you everything you need to know.

Walking back toward the Hyatt with a frozen sour apple daiquiri from Wet Willie’s in hand, Savannah felt wonderfully alive. Music drifted through the streets, people lingered along the river, and neither of us was ready for the evening to end. We spent a little more time talking downstairs at the hotel before finally calling it a night.

Looking back, Thursday quietly established the rhythm for everything that followed.

There would be wonderful meals.

Unexpected discoveries.

Honest opinions.

And plenty of moments that reminded us the best trips aren’t always measured by how much you do.

Sometimes they’re measured by how present you allow yourself to be.

Tomorrow, we’ll share how a slow Friday morning, bottomless mimosas, a historic landmark restaurant, and one very honest review became some of the most memorable moments of our anniversary weekend.
