There is something almost magical about a summer storm.
One moment, the sky is painted in shades of blue, the sun is warm on your shoulders, and the world feels calm. Then, almost without warning, dark clouds begin to gather on the horizon. The wind begins to whisper through the trees. Leaves dance across the yard. A distant rumble of thunder reminds you that something is coming.
Within minutes, the rain is falling in sheets. Lightning stretches across the sky. Thunder shakes the windows. If you’re safely inside, you pause whatever you’re doing to watch nature put on its spectacular display. If you’re caught outside, your only thought is finding shelter until it passes.
And yet, no matter how fierce the storm becomes, one thing is always true.
It doesn’t last forever.
Eventually the thunder grows quieter. The lightning drifts farther into the distance. The rain softens from a steady downpour to a gentle drizzle. Before long, rays of sunshine begin to peek through the clouds, warming the earth once again. Steam rises from the pavement. The leaves seem greener. The flowers stand a little taller. The air smells fresh and clean, as though the world has been given a chance to begin again.
The older I get, the more I realize that life has its own summer storms.
Sometimes they arrive without warning. A difficult conversation. A disappointment you never expected. A season that feels heavier than you imagined. In the middle of those moments, it’s easy to believe the clouds will never lift.
But they do.
Not always as quickly as we’d like. Sometimes the storm leaves behind broken branches or muddy paths that take time to clean up. Yet eventually, little by little, the light returns.
I’ve learned that life isn’t about avoiding every storm. Some storms water the places in us that have become dry. Some wash away things we’ve been holding onto for too long. And some remind us that even when we can’t see the sun, it is still there beyond the clouds.
So if today feels a little stormy, don’t lose hope. Let the rain fall if it needs to. Trust that this storm won’t last forever.
The sun has a remarkable way of finding its way back.
And when it does, you may discover the storm left behind is exactly what you needed to grow.
Design a life you love… deliberately.
