A Date Night Worth Repeating

A Deliberate Detour to Cabernet Steakhouse

Sometimes the best detours aren’t hundreds of miles away.

Sometimes they’re just a short drive from home.

One day last week, while Tom was relaxing over a cigar with friends, the conversation turned to one simple question:

“Where’s the best steakhouse around here?”

Without hesitation, one name kept coming up—Cabernet Steakhouse in Alpharetta.

When several people recommend the same place, it’s usually worth paying attention.

So that Saturday, we decided our date night deserved a little deliberate detour.

Cabernet has been serving guests for 26 years, making it an established icon in the area. From the moment we pulled into the valet, it felt like a restaurant that had earned its reputation over time.

Walking inside, we immediately noticed what Tom described as “a beautiful mixture of fine dark wood and bright off-white ceilings,” softened by low lighting that created a warm, intimate atmosphere. It struck the perfect balance between upscale elegance and relaxed comfort, and we were escorted to a cozy oversized booth that instantly made us feel at home.

Before making reservations, it’s worth mentioning that Cabernet is definitely an upscale dining experience. Business casual attire is expected, and while jackets aren’t required, it’s the kind of place where dressing up just a little feels perfectly appropriate. The pricing reflects that as well, making it an ideal destination for anniversaries, birthdays, celebrations, or simply treating yourselves to a memorable evening together.

Tom ordered a bourbon while I chose a glass of wine, and warm bread soon arrived at our table as we settled in.

One of the things that impressed us most throughout the evening was the exceptional hospitality.

Our server, Robert, was outstanding. Friendly, knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely engaging, he struck that perfect balance of making sure we had everything we needed without ever making us feel rushed. Great service has a way of elevating an entire evening, and Robert certainly did that.

Throughout the evening, the staff consistently checked on us without ever feeling intrusive. Assistant General Manager Tavarus Johnson greeted us personally and stopped by a few times during our meal to make sure everything was just right. It’s that kind of attention to detail that helps explain why Cabernet has remained an established icon in the area for 26 years.

Tom began with the escargot wrapped in flaky pastry with a creamy filling.

His review was wonderfully simple.

“Superb.”

For dinner, we both chose the petite filet and shared a twice-baked potato.

The steaks were exactly what you hope for when you visit a steakhouse known for its reputation—perfectly cooked, incredibly tender, buttery, and full of flavor. The twice-baked potato was creamy, rich, and easily large enough for both of us.

Even as more guests filled the restaurant, something stood out.

It never became loud.

Our booth felt almost private, allowing us to slow down, enjoy wonderful conversation, and simply appreciate being together.

Sometimes that’s the greatest luxury a restaurant can offer.

When dessert arrived, Robert’s recommendation proved to be another excellent one.

The carrot cake was wonderfully moist, lightly spiced, not overly sweet, and topped with smooth cream cheese frosting that made it the perfect ending to dinner.

Just when we thought our evening was winding down, we discovered something unexpected.

Cabernet’s separate cigar lounge.

Completely isolated from the dining room with excellent ventilation, it features a walk-in humidor, cocktails, annual cigar lockers, live music, and a warm atmosphere where guests can relax after dinner. Tom enjoyed a cigar while we lingered just a little longer, savoring what had already become one of our favorite date nights in quite some time.

As we walked out, we looked at one another and smiled.

Without even discussing it, we both knew we’d found a place we’d happily return to.

Great restaurants serve memorable meals.

Exceptional restaurants create evenings you don’t want to end.

Cabernet gave us both.

Sometimes the best detours don’t require a plane ticket or a weekend getaway.

Sometimes they’re simply an evening that reminds you to slow down, enjoy one another, and make an ordinary Saturday feel just a little more extraordinary.
